Taipei 101 is punctuation. The sentence is an MRT village, heat that finds the back of your shirt, a stall after the office, and the person packing up because school is tomorrow. First days here are a sitting: read the living culture, then decide if the island is a week or a later trip.
The living culture
Breakfast starts before your alarm in more than one neighborhood. The next table has already chosen. A temple sits in the middle of lunch. Scooters negotiate a sidewalk the way conversations do. The alley is a room. The walk-up is a weather station. You take the heat as a fact, not a complaint for the camera.
The MRT did not erase the village. It stacked villages and gave them names on a map. Zhongshan is a different volume from Ximending. A transfer is gravity, not a personality. The guest who only rides between trophies will learn trophies. The guest who walks the residential grid in the morning will learn who buys greens.
Order the thing the next table ordered. Then walk until another temple appears. That is already a Tainan day — and a Taipei night if you let it be.
What is there to sit with
One market as a sitting. Who is still working after the office. Who is packing the stall for school tomorrow. Shilin is the parade. Ningxia is closer to a neighborhood arguing about food. One is enough. Afternoon: either stay in the basin or pick one day-trip cluster — Jiufen or Beitou and Yangmingshan, not both as a punishment.
If you go south, Tainan still sets the table — breakfast as the next chapter, grandparents as the room, Hokkien in the living room. Typhoon night: everyone home early. That is living-room weather. Official notices move. We will not invent a cancelled-train table.

Ximending or Main Station if you want first-timer gravity and a door near an interchange. Zhongshan for cafés and a softer volume. Xinyi if malls and the tower are the point. Sleep near an MRT interchange. Future-you will send a thank-you text.
