Where should a first-timer sleep?
Near an interchange, and future-you will send a thank-you text. Ximending or Main Station if you want first-timer gravity and everything within one transfer. Zhongshan for cafés and a softer volume. Xinyi if the malls and the tower are genuinely the point. The city room is Taipei.
What does a week that finishes look like?
A soft landing, one city day, one day-trip — the Jiufen cluster or Beitou and Yangmingshan, not both — and then rail south if “not only Taipei” is really the itinerary. It can also just be eating. That counts. The longer version is Taipei first days, and the southern half is Tainan.
