Vietnam
A cook keeps a pot going on a Hanoi sidewalk.
Hanoi mornings are a broth you can hear. The country feeds its own first.
A cook on a Hanoi sidewalk lifts a lid, tastes, and puts it back. Her grandson is already on the back of the xe máy, schoolbag sideways. The country feeds its own first, then sells you a bowl if you sit down like a person. Vietnam is long — more than a thousand miles north to south — and every hour spent covering it is an hour not spent in that alley. Sit in one city first. Official entry lives on a .gov.vn. Pay for distance once.
The short answer
What is there
Alleys, broth, water with a job
Hanoi sidewalk kitchens. Ha Long as workplace water. A Hoi An street that still sews. Tết as a family year in a house.
What you can learn
The country feeds its own first
Sit where the shift already sits. The north still sets a tone. A family table does not need a tourist plot.
How to be a guest
Tết is not a festival product
Pay for distance once. Official e-visa lives on a .gov.vn. A third overnight bus costs you the week.
Start with the essays below — the pot, the alley, the family year. Entry and the e-visa come after. The free Asia chooser kit helps you decide which country goes first. We will not invent a rail fare or a lantern-hour to look finished.
Before you go
Where do I apply for the visa?
Only on the official government portals — evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn. Agencies that rank well on search are a tax with a logo. Fee rows, processing days, and the exemption window are published there; we transcribe them on the entry page with the date we checked, and we re-read the embassy text for your passport rather than guessing it.
What shape should the trip be?
North focus, south focus, or one honest spine: Hanoi → water (Ha Long or Ninh Binh) → Hoi An and Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City if the calendar is kind. Three of those, well, beats six of them badly.
Overnight buses sound like a story. The first one can be. The third one costs you the week: a sore neck, and a country you no longer have a mind to meet. Buy the long distance once — a flight or a sleeper you chose on purpose — and spend the rest of the week standing still.
What is the hard part nobody prices?
Traffic that reads as chaos until you notice it is a negotiation, and the crossing you make by walking steadily rather than by waiting for a gap. Learn two phrases badly and use them anyway. Grab works in the big cities; cash still matters in the small ones. Ha Long is mist and marketing — the bay rewards the traveller who sleeps on it.
How to finish
Official portal first
evisa.gov.vn only. Middlemen are a tax with a logo. One base, then sit
Hanoi broth or a south ward. The alley is a room. Not fourteen cities.Pay for distance once
Air or one long sit. A third overnight bus costs you the week. Overnight vs fly.Da Nang is a door
Not a trophy. Hoi An is the walking if lanterns are the chapter.
Essays
On the Vietnam desk.
The articles for this country. Broth, water, Tết, then food, history, courtesy, enough Vietnamese to move, and how to stay a guest. Villages and the corridor wait below.
Read first
Why Vietnam is already at the table
Broth, scooters, a country that is busy being itself.
Lacquer, silk, and a street that still makes
Workshops, hats as tools, Hoi An without the costume.
Water is a material, not a backdrop
Karst, delta, rain — the country is written in wet.
Tết is a family reunion
Homecoming, blossom, a kitchen that feeds the year.
Food day to day
The country feeds its own first. Sit where the shift already sits.
History underfoot
Walk like the street remembers. The war is not a backdrop.
Dating, respectfully
Family is in the room even when they are not. No pickup scripts.
Marriage and family
Three ages, one light well. Marriage is a family conversation.
Laws and courtesy
The crossing is a negotiation. We will not invent a fine.
Enough Vietnamese to move
Two phrases, badly, anyway. Tones will humble you.
Being a guest
You are in the front room. The camera is not a compliment.
Ten decisions
Lived choices that finish a week. Not a recycled pin list.
How houses feel
Tube house, alley as a room. The family starts after the second doorway.
How work feels
The pot on the street and the badge in the lift. Both count.
The year
Grey northern winters, southern curtain rains — which half of the country you get.
After the essays
Next village. Then the corridor.
The articles stay above. Below are places you can sit in next, then a spine between countries.
