Learn two phrases badly and use them anyway.
Xin chào. Cảm ơn. Xin lỗi. The tones will wander. The stall will still sell you the bowl. Enough Vietnamese to move is not a course. It is how you enter a room that was not built in English.
The living culture
Neither the stall nor the lift owes you English. A woman with the lid in her hand has a morning. You have a mouth. Use it for hello, thank you, sorry. Bao nhiêu if you are buying and the number has not appeared. Không cay if the heat in the bowl is the question. Then sit down like a person.
Tones are not decoration. They move meaning. You will get them wrong. That is the work. A Hanoi ear and a Saigon ear do not always agree on the same syllable. You are not here to win a contest. You are here to not be the guest who only points with a card and a sigh.
What is there to sit with
Script is Latin. You can read a menu more often than you think, and still not know how to say it. That is allowed. The next stool is the menu. The smile when the tone wandered is information, not always mockery.
Tết will empty the city. The phrases still work in a quieter street. They also work when the street is a negotiation. Walk steadily. Learn the two, then the third. Fluency can wait for a life you have not chosen yet.
Pointing is fine. A lecture about your app is not. The phrase, badly, is the courtesy.

How much Vietnamese do I actually need?
Enough to greet, thank, and apologize. Enough to point at a pot without a speech in English. Tones will humble you. Use them anyway. Fluency is a later trip. Movement is xin chào, cảm ơn, xin lỗi, and a face that is not performing. The stool does the rest: food as a working day.
Why do people smile when I say it wrong?
Because the tone moved the word. Northern Vietnamese is often taught with six tones. The south does not always say the same word the same way. A smile is not always mockery. Repeat once. Do not give a lecture about how hard it is. They already know.
English as a personality?
Do not demand it. Do not punish a stall for not having it. A translation app is fine. Shouting is not. Work rooms vary — speak clearly, then wait. How that looks from the spare stool: How work feels. Dating rooms: a greeting in their language is manners, not a pickup script — Dating, respectfully.
Apps, classes, a month in Hanoi?
An app used with a smile beats a lecture. A class is a later decision we will not price. We will not invent a tuition, a “fluency in three weeks,” or a school hour. If you came to move through a week, two phrases and pointing will carry more than a syllabus you did not finish.

Keep English as a backup, not a demand
An app with a smile. No shouting. No punishment for a stall that did not study your language. Work rooms: speak clearly and wait.
