Steam, a stool, a tap that has heard this speech before. An onsen is not a pool party with a mountain attached. It is a house with a rule: you arrive clean, you soak, you do not make the water into a conversation.

A house, not a spa brochure

The photograph sells cedar and mist. The room sells a row of people who already know which stool is theirs. You are a guest in a bath. Voices down. Phones stay in the locker — a camera in a changing room is not a travel tip. It is a crime in the ordinary sense.

Sento is the neighborhood version: after work, not after a hashtag. Onsen is the mineral version, often a town with a last train. Both ask the same manners. Courtesy is how a crowded country stays livable.

If you would not do it in someone else’s bathroom, do not do it here.

Decide

Do I wash before the bath?

Yes. Always. Soap and rinse at the stools until you would not mind sitting next to yourself. The bath is for soaking, not for becoming clean. Entering dirty is how you become a story they tell after you leave.

Tattoos — am I banned?

Some houses yes, some houses cover, some houses do not care. It is the house’s rule, not a national law you can argue at the door. Check that house. We will not invent a yes for every noren.

Swimwear?

Usually no, in a traditional indoor or rotenburo. Mixed or hotel pools are a different product. Follow the house you paid. Towels do not go in the water. Hair up if it is long enough to become other people’s problem.

Is an onsen a day trip from Tokyo?

It can be. Hakone, the Izu coast, a sento that is still a neighborhood tool. We will not invent a fare or a last bus. The operator has the clock. A sento in the east is also a bath — Miyano-Yu kept the name after the steam left.

How to take it

Clean, then soak

The locker is the border
Shoes where shoes go. Clothes in the basket. Small towel for sitting and covering, not for the water. Watch the people who already live here.
Wash like you mean it
Stool, soap, rinse until the water running off you is boring. Then the bath. Hair up. No diving. No washing in the soak.
Leave as quietly as you entered
Dry before the changing room becomes a puddle. A vending machine drink is allowed. A loud review in the doorway is not.

Then go

If the week is Tokyo villages, a sento or a day of water is plenty. If the week is already steel toward Kyoto, do not staple Hakone onto a temple cluster because a ranking did. One bath. One quiet. Home.
