Parents still ask when.
A lot of romance here still has a dining table at the far end of it. Jeong is extra banchan and a grandmother who already has the lobby. Chuseok and Seollal are homecoming — cities empty toward hometowns. Marriage is not only two people. It is a building, a deposit word, a train, and a living room that is too small.
The living culture
Multi-generation is not a lifestyle brand. A grandparent has a room, or a mattress that appears when the cousins come. The television is on for the news and for nobody. The young people leave for the first subway. The old people go downstairs in visors and take the sidewalk. You will see the outside of this from the street: a playground the size of a promise, an elevator that fills at the same minute every morning.
Dating can stay without becoming the house. The person across from you may have a parent who still asks, a sibling doing military time, a cousin’s wedding that ate the only weekend. Curiosity and manners. Then the last subway. The dating room is relationships. This page is the table at the far end.
Do not ask to be taken to a real Chuseok. They already have a real one. It has a grave to visit and a living room that is too small and a television that stays on.
What is there to sit with
Chuseok and Seollal empty the cities toward hometowns. Trains sell out. If you land then, walk kindly. Restaurants that stay open are feeding the people who could not go, and the people who work so others can. You are not owed a performance of tradition. Bring fruit if you are invited. Bring quiet if you are not.
Sunday lunch is packed at a restaurant that did not ask to be famous. Weddings, when you glimpse them, look like a family meeting with better clothes. Age is spoken. Someone is doing math you will not be shown. We will not invent a hall price or a guest count. The guest job is the same as at dinner: sit where pointed, pour up, leave before you become the story. How to stay a guest.
What you can learn from it
Family week is not a festival. The empty capital is a household that still goes home. Jeong at that table is labor: banchan from the kimchi fridge, fruit after, a cloth folded like a verdict. You do not get to narrate marriage, deposits, or military time as your insight. You get to not make it worse.
Jeonse is a word you will hear long before you need a contract — a life stage, a parental meeting, a reason a wedding waits. Those numbers move. Official housing pages if you ever need figures. Transfer the lesson: fruit, not a speech. Then the train home. The grandmother in the visor will still be in the lobby.
Decide
Decide
If I am invited to a family meal, what is being asked of me?
You are being trusted with the house. Shoes off. Sit where you are pointed. Pour up the table. Do not finish the last banchan without offering it around. Fruit after. Help stack if they let you. Leave before the grandmother starts folding the cloth like a verdict. The floor: how a house is lived in.
What is Chuseok — or Seollal — for a guest?
Someone else’s reunion. Cities empty toward hometowns. Trains sell out. If you land then, you are walking through a capital that lent itself out. You are a guest in a family week, not a customer of a festival. Do not ask to be taken to a real Chuseok. They already have one. Calendar: events.
Do I talk about marriage at the table?
Only if they open it. Parents still ask when. Age is spoken aloud. Living together is a conversation, not a default. Military service still cuts a hole in many men’s twenties. None of this is a rule for the whole country. All of it is weather you will feel if you are invited twice. You do not get to narrate it as your insight.
What is jeonse, if I am only visiting?
A word you will hear at a table long before you need a contract. A large key-money deposit instead of most of a monthly rent — a lump that is supposed to come back. Families talk about it the way other countries talk about a mortgage: a life stage, a parental meeting, a reason a wedding waits. Those numbers move. We will not invent them. Official housing pages and a lawyer who is not your group chat, if you ever need figures.
Guest practice at the family table
Follow the clean floor
Shoes off. The host will say don’t bother and they do not mean it. The house already wrote the rule.
Sit, pour, offer the last plate
Banchan is winter work. Do not treat it like a buffet. Meal grammar: how meals work.
Do not collect the family as atmosphere
No filming. No “real Korean family” caption. No questions about money, deposits, or when the wedding is, unless they open that door.
Leave before the cloth is folded
That fold is a verdict. Thank them once. The grandmother in the visor will still be in the lobby. That is the house, still going.
