Monsoon and typhoon windows decide what a boat will do. Year-labeled forecasts beat a blog from a lucky March. Slack in the calendar is how you stay a guest instead of a problem. The dry season is not a personality. It is a crowd on a famous cliff and a calmer week if you pick a less famous town.

El Nido, Palawan, the Visayas — names that already carry a weight. Stay in a town long enough to buy fruit twice. The hopping is optional. Karst and lake are geologies with rules. A drone over a cliff is not a personality. Life jackets are not a vibe.

Indigenous and Muslim souths have their own rooms. Read those rooms before you treat Mindanao as a thriller or a secret. The cities essay is the other half of the country. The sea does not erase the house.

What is there to sit with

The sea as workplace is the first fact. Nets, a motor, a kitchen that is also a reef. Pay fairly. Ask the name of the place you are looking at. Do not bargain as if the water were a game. Do not leave plastic in a water that is also a plate.

Kamayan on a coast is often just lunch — hands, rice, fish that had a job this morning. English will get you a boat and still have a Filipino center. Listen for the town’s name, not only the cliff’s.
