Taiwan · south
The harbor exhales.
Taipei is walk-ups and rain on tile. Kaohsiung is a port that still has a job: cranes, heat, a night market that is a sitting, not a list. Take the high-speed south if the island is more than one basin. Sleep. Eat. Do not raid it from the capital with a suitcase.
Not a Taipei footnote
First-timers treat the south as a day they can steal from the capital. That is how you remember a dome of glass and forget the harbor air. Kaohsiung wants evening. It wants a market that is still working when Taipei would already be a transfer corridor.
History here is underfoot: a port city, labor, a river that has been cleaned and bragged about. You do not need a dynasty dump. You need an MRT, a stool, and the humility to skip a second city if the heat already won.
The night market is a sitting. If you treat it as a list, you will remember sauce and forget the street.
Entry and Pass math live on BOCA + THSR. EasyCard is the city tool — we will not invent a stored-value number. First-timer spine: Taipei first days.
Decide
Decide
Day trip from Taipei or a night?
A night if the island is more than Taipei. High-speed south is a chapter break, not a commute with a rolling bag you then drag through a harbor. Tainan can share the south if the week still breathes — not both as a punishment.
THSR Pass or singles?
Run the official Pass table against the tickets you will actually ride. Unlimited is a feeling. Two reserved seats can be lunch money. Dated tables: Taiwan transit. We will not invent a fare here.
Where to sleep?
Near an MRT that hits the harbor and a market without a taxi novel. The walk-up is the island’s real hotel. Formosa Boulevard is a station with a window, not a personality.
Skip Kaohsiung if the week is thin?
Yes. Taipei already makes a finishable island. Kaohsiung is the south’s exhale — harbor, heat, a night market as a sitting. Do not staple it onto a Jiufen day.
How to take it
Steel south, then sit.
Run the official table
Pass versus singles for the rides you will actually take. Then buy, or do not. The operator wins.
One harbor afternoon
Water, a museum or a warehouse district, not both plus a mountain as punishment. Heat is a fact. Drink water like it is a job.
Market as a chapter
One night market. Sit. Do not graze fourteen stalls into a stomachache you will blame on Taiwan. Sleep. Morning train if Tainan breakfast is the next chapter.
A south that finishes
THSR. Harbor air. A sitting at night. Sleep. If the week still breathes, Tainan breakfast is the other southern chapter — not a third commute. Typhoon windows are real; see seasons.
