Vietnam · first days
A first night in Vietnam is one city and a bowl.
The hard part is not the bowl. It is arriving with fourteen cities and an e-visa from a logo. Official portal first. One base. Heat as weather. Then a night that actually ends.
Before the scooters
First-timers try to collect Vietnam like a corridor of overnight buses. That is how you remember a sore neck and forget the broth. The first forty-eight hours are entry, water, a bed near the walking, and one meal that is not a performance.
Enough Vietnamese to move lives on the language page. Courtesy is sidewalk-shaped: watch the person already carrying a child through it.
One overnight can be a story. A third overnight bus costs you the week.
Ha Long is mist and marketing — an overnight on a vetted boat beats a day-trip that treats the bay like a drive-through. Hoi An is lanterns at human speed if you give the vans a day of their own. Neither is night one.
Decide
Decide
What must be done before the plane?
The e-visa, on the official government portals only. evisa.gov.vn or the companion thithucdientu.gov.vn. Middlemen are a tax with a logo. Match your passport to the published rules. Full notes: Vietnam entry.
Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh first?
One base. Hanoi if you want broth you can hear. Ho Chi Minh City if you want heat and a finishable night. A third overnight bus costs you the week. Pay for distance once.
Cash, cards, SIM?
Cards work more than the old jokes admit. Cash still matters on stools. eSIM or a local SIM the airport actually sells. We will not tell you how much to withdraw or which stall is honest.
When is the first week the wrong week?
Tết. Cities empty toward hometowns. The kitchen closes because the cook is on a motorbike toward a village you will not be invited to. You are a guest in a family week. See seasons.
How to take it
Portal, base, bowl
Official e-visa
Only the .gov.vn doors. Print or screenshot what they tell you to carry. We will not invent a fee here — the table lives on the portal.
Sleep near the walking
Old Quarter gravity in the north. District 1 gravity in the south. Not a resort that requires a taxi novel for breakfast.
One finishable first night
A stool, a bowl, water, sleep. Museums and bays wait. Being a guest is the whole week.
Then the country can start
After the first sleep: one walking day, then water or lanterns — not both on the same day. Japan and Korea are different corridors. Do not staple them because a video did.
