Vietnam · south

The south does not whisper.

Heat arrives before you do. Scooters are a weather system. A plastic stool, a broth that is not Hanoi’s, a night that keeps offering itself. Ho Chi Minh City is a working south. Read it, then pick one ward. Not fourteen pins.

A city that is already late

First-timers try to “do Saigon.” The city does not offer that verb. District 1 is a gravity well. Cholon still has a job. Thao Dien is a different volume. Pick a base near the walking you will actually do, then let the heat decide the afternoon.

History here is not a museum you check off in an hour, though the museums will take the hour. The sidewalk still holds it: a war that is still in living rooms, a market that opens because someone has to eat, a church and a temple on the same sweaty block.

If your feet hurt in a good ward, you are doing it right. If they hurt in a taxi between pins, the week is already thinner.

Tết empties cities toward hometowns. You are a guest in a family week, not a customer of a festival. See Tết and seasons.

Decide

Decide

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City?

Both names are in the air. The official city is Ho Chi Minh. People still say Saigon for the older street name. Use either without turning it into a personality. The streets do not care about your footnote.

How many days does the south actually want?

Three unsmashed if this is the only Vietnamese city: a landing, one District 1 day that is not a checklist, one slower ward. Four if the Mekong is a day, not a second itinerary. A single overnight treats the south like a layover with scooters.

Start north or south?

Hanoi if the week wants broth and a grey winter. HCMC if the week wants heat and a finishable night. Do not collect fourteen cities because a video did. Open-jaw if it kills a dead day. Entry only on official portals: Vietnam entry.

Grab, taxi, or a rented bike?

Walk when the block is a block. Ride when the city is weather. We will not invent a fare or tell you to become traffic. A motorbike you cannot already ride is how you join the wrong statistic. The bag is architecture.

Hanoi in the same week?

Only if you pay for distance once. Open-jaw if it kills a dead day. Overnight vs fly. Official e-visa first: Vietnam entry.

How to take it

One ward, one night that ends

  1. Land and drink water

First hours are heat management, not a rooftop. Vietnam first days. The e-visa is already supposed to be done.

  2. One walking day

A museum or a market, not both plus a tunnel day. Lunch on a stool. The nineteenth pin will not remember you.

  3. Corridor or stay

Hoi An is lanterns at human speed if you give the vans a day of their own. Da Nang is a door. Hanoi is a different broth. A third overnight bus costs you the week.

A night that finishes

Coffee that is a ritual. A bowl. A walk that is not a scavenger hunt. Sleep before the city talks you into a third district. Next: Hanoi if the calendar still wants the north, or Hoi An if lanterns are the middle chapter.
