You land and the air tastes like rain on metal. A station attendant has already said the same sentence two hundred times today. The IC card is not a personality. It is the click that makes Tokyo a stack of villages instead of a game you are losing.

A card, not a romance

Everyone wants the unlimited-train movie. Inside one metro, that movie is plastic you tap. Suica, PASMO, and the visitor versions the machines are selling this year. JR lines inside Tokyo still take that card. A nationwide pass is a different product — japanrailpass.net if the map grows.

Convenience stores take it. Some vending machines take it. The egg sandwich is infrastructure — combini dinner. We will not tell you how much to load. Reload when asked.

Buy the card before you collect opinions. The city is already commuting.

Decide

Do I need Suica or PASMO?

Either. They open the same gates in the capital and talk to convenience stores. Pick the machine in front of you. Visitor versions exist in some years — Welcome Suica and peers — with rules that move. We will not invent a deposit, a stored-value number, or which card the window is selling this month. Does a JR Pass replace the IC card?

No. A nationwide pass is long steel between cities. It does not make the metro free. Tokyo-only weeks are IC and your feet. Run official yen only if the map grows a second city: JR Pass 2026 · when to skip.

Phone wallet or plastic?

Plastic if your phone and the issuer still disagree. Wallet if it already works on your device. Do not debug this on a platform at rush hour. Buy the card before you collect opinions. Reload when the reader asks.

Can I use it outside Tokyo?

Many cities take the same plastic. Some still want their own card. We will not print a nationwide compatibility chart that rots. If a gate says no, the local issuer has the yes.

How to take it

Tap in, then be a person

The first machine
Airport or the first station that looks like a station. Follow the issuer’s visitor card if that is the door this year. Passport if they ask. We do not invent which window is open on a Sunday.
One loop
The Yamanote teaches the villages. After that, learn one metro line by accident. A connection that looks tidy on a map can be ten minutes of humidity.
Pass math later
If tomorrow is Kyoto steel, run the official table. If tomorrow is Kamakura sand, stay on IC.

Then go

Voices down in the car. Phone to your chest. Let people off first. Tokyo Metro publishes its own platform manners — follow them. The hard part is not the ticket machine. The hard part is becoming a corridor problem with a suitcase. Forward the big bag.
