Everyone wants the unlimited-train movie. Sometimes that movie costs more than two good reserved seats and a beer at the end. Here is the boring, kind version — full official tables, channel differences, dated August 2026. No invented fares.

Source of truth only: japanrailpass.net — Types and prices. Re-check before you buy; JR can change tables. Children on the pass are ages 6–11 at the relevant purchase / exchange-order date (age-12 elementary students are adults for JR Pass rules — see the official page footnotes).

Classic 10 with one Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen pair? You usually skip the nationwide pass. That is not cynicism. That is lunch money.
What the pass is not
- Not automatic Nozomi / Mizuho on Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen — JR documents a special ticket for pass holders if you need those services. Confirm on japanrailpass.net before you plan a Nozomi-only day.
- Not a substitute for local IC cards inside one metro spiderweb.
- Not “always cheaper after October” math — channel and class matter.
When it starts to grin
Multi-city rail that looks like a spider. Hokkaido plus Hiroshima plus the middle. Regional passes when your map is actually regional. If you are mostly Tokyo sidewalks, an IC card is the romance.
Sleep near the train you will actually use. Then go be a person in Kyoto or a hungry one in Osaka. Crossing to Korea after Kyushu? Read the Japan–Korea corridor before you staple a nationwide pass onto a ferry day.
