Multi-country · route
Night markets, then a bowl evening. One hop.
Read both cultures first: a civic night at a stall, then Tết as a family year. They fit when the air leg is a real border with a pillow on both sides. Official entry and rail only. Dated 23 August 2026.
What you can learn from the pair
A stall that is someone’s second shift, then a stool that already has a shift. Sit with why Taiwan and why Vietnam before you treat either kitchen as a ranking.
Who this is for
Roughly 12–18 days if both places get a fair share. Under ~11 days, pick one and save the other — Taipei alone or Hanoi/Hoi An alone will beat a two-stamp blur. Longer than that, deepen (Tainan overnight, east coast only with spare days, Ha Long overnight, Hoi An) — not a third international airport day.
Arrive one country, leave the other. Round-tripping back through Taoyuan or Tân Sơn Nhất just to “use the same ticket” often spends the savings in trains, hotels, and attention.
The spine (default shape)
- Taipei — 3–5 nights. Night markets as a neighborhood, not a checklist; MRT base near an interchange. Taipei neighborhoods · first days.
- Optional south — THSR to Taichung or Tainan for 1–2 nights if “not only Taipei” is the point. One high-speed day beats stacking every west-coast pin. Tainan · THSR Pass math.
- Border flight — short-haul / medium-haul Taiwan ↔ Vietnam (Taipei TPE/TSA or Kaohsiung KHH when schedules cooperate ↔ Hà Nội / Nội Bài, Đà Nẵng, or HCMC / Tân Sơn Nhất). No invented NTD or USD air fares — shop the week you travel.
- Vietnam corridor (pick one primary shape)
- North focus — Hanoi 3–4 nights + Ha Long or Ninh Binh 1–2 nights. Soft landing after Taiwan density. Hanoi · Ha Long.
- Central lantern — Đà Nẵng utility airport → Hoi An 3–4 nights. Hoi An.
- South city — HCMC 3–4 nights only if that is the point; do not bolt it on after a tired north week without spare days.
Reverse works cleanly: Vietnam corridor first → flight into Taipei (or Kaohsiung) → Taiwan spine → fly home from Taiwan. Same two stamps, different first meal. If your passport is on Vietnam’s temporary exemption list (Japan and ROK are named on the embassy notice below — Taiwan ROC is not that list; Taiwan travelers still follow Immigration / their own path), starting Vietnam can mean one less document before the hop — still re-read the live text for your nationality. Taiwan entry still has its own BOCA / visa path.
The border: air (not a rail story)
There is no tourist ferry product that replaces the hop. The practical Taiwan–Vietnam tourist border is air. City pairs travelers actually use include Taipei (TPE/TSA) ↔ HAN / DAD / SGN and Kaohsiung (KHH) ↔ the same three when schedules cooperate. Carriers and fares move weekly — Yomu will not freeze a fake “always NT$xx” into this page.
- Prefer an open-jaw international ticket (arrive Taiwan / leave Vietnam, or reverse) when the math works.
- Build half a buffer day around the hop — immigration, luggage, hotel check-in, and a soft first meal beat racing a night market or a Ha Long bus.
- Taoyuan (TPE) vs Songshan (TSA) vs Kaohsiung (KHH) changes ground time — match airport to hotel side before you celebrate a cheap fare.
- Nội Bài (HAN) vs Đà Nẵng (DAD) vs Tân Sơn Nhất (SGN) changes the entire Vietnam shape — pick the airport for the corridor you will actually walk, not the cheapest map pin.
- Typhoon and monsoon windows differ by region. Taiwan late-summer storms and Vietnam rains can both move flights; have a mental air/hotel backup.
Rail money (Taiwan only — do not invent Vietnam rail tables)
Taiwan
Run the math on the BOCA + THSR Pass page before you buy a multi-day pass for one Taipei–Tainan hop. Classic Taipei-only usually needs EasyCard (or peer), not unlimited high-speed. A Taipei + Tainan (+ optional Taichung) loop inside one Pass activation window is when THSR Pass gets interesting again.
- Official THSR Pass (re-checked 23 Aug 2026 — no drift vs 15/19/20 Aug): 3-Day adult NT$2,200 / child NT$1,100 · Flexible 2-Day adult NT$2,500 / child NT$1,250 — pass.thsrc.com.tw.
- Standard class only (not business). Short-term foreign visitors only — R.O.C. passport / ARC holders are ineligible on the official product page.
- No invented single-seat NTD tables on this site for ordinary tickets. Confirm live on en.thsrc.com.tw or the Pass site when the Pass math loses.
Vietnam
Intercity rail exists (Vietnam Railways), but Yomu does not invent seat fares, berth prices, or “always book SE1” here. Treat long overnights as optional texture after the corridor is chosen — confirm live on the operator:
- Vietnam Railways (English): vr.com.vn/en
- City movement in Hanoi / HCMC / Đà Nẵng is usually app taxi / Grab / walkable cores — not a pass product. No invented Grab quotes on this site.
Visas & entry (official only)
Two entries mean two rulebooks. Yomu will not guess your stamp. Start on the government page that matches your nationality and passport type:
- Taiwan BOCA visa-exempt entry (cohorts 90 / 30 / 14 days + footnotes; re-checked 23 Aug 2026 — cohorts still stand; TH/BN/PH trial ordinary passports up to 14 days effective until 31 Jul 2027): boca.gov.tw visa-exempt. Full hygiene: Taiwan entry + rail.
- Taiwan online immigration arrival card (TWAC) — complete within the window stated on the live form (site previously cited: within 7 days prior to arrival): twac.immigration.gov.tw (HTTP 200 on 23 Aug 2026).
- Passport-validity footnotes on BOCA: general wording often ≥6 months on entry; Japan passport valid for intended stay; USA intended stay (incl. some emergency passports) per BOCA wording — re-read the live page for your document.
- Vietnam e-visa official domains (Immigration notice from 08:00 11 Nov 2024 GMT+7): evisa.gov.vn · thithucdientu.gov.vn · index immigration.gov.vn
- Fee wording on Immigration English apply flow (re-checked 23 Aug 2026 — no drift vs 16/20/21/22 Aug): processed in 3 working days; USD $25 single-entry e-visa · USD $50 multiple-entry e-visa — evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn apply steps. Full hygiene: Vietnam entry + e-visa.
- Temporary unilateral exemption (dated embassy notice, not a full world matrix): Resolution 44/NQ-CP (7 Mar 2025), effective 15 Mar 2025 → 14 Mar 2028, 45 days for 12 named countries including Japan, ROK, DE, FR, IT, ES, UK, RU, DK, SE, NO, FI — VN Embassy Japan English notice. US and other passports: follow Immigration / your own embassy pointer — do not invent a US exemption from this list. Taiwan travelers: confirm your own stamp path; do not assume the Japan/ROK cohort applies.
If the site is not a .gov.vn immigration property (or BOCA / TWAC / pass.thsrc surfaces), treat the fee as a private service charge — not the government price.
Season & load
- Taiwan heat / typhoon windows — summer is a wet coat; build slack around late summer storms. See Taiwan seasons.
- Vietnam north vs south climate — Hanoi winters can be grey and cool; the central coast has its own rain windows; the south runs hotter and wetter on a different clock. See Vietnam seasons.
- Chinese New Year / major Taiwan holidays — rail and hotels fill. Book the Taiwan long legs early or accept fewer cities.
- Tết / major Vietnamese holidays — lovely and logistics-heavy; book domestic seats and hotels early or accept quieter days and closed doors.
Packing the trip so it stays human
- One bag you can lift into an overhead bin without a committee meeting.
- eSIM or local SIMs planned per country; offline maps before airport Wi-Fi lies to you.
- Taiwan EasyCard (or peer) for city calm; Vietnam cash + card mix still matters outside cores.
- Do not day-trip the international hop from a far suburb “to save a hotel.” Sleep near the departure airport corridor the night before if the flight is early.
- Money order: international open-jaw → Taiwan high-speed only if math wins → Vietnam hotels near the corridor you chose → BOCA/TWAC + e-visa or exemption check before non-refundable domestic add-ons → Ha Long boat only from operators you can name.
Sample day budgets (philosophy, not a quote)
We refuse fake daily totals. Pay for the international hop and any long Taiwan rail once in the plan, then keep city days food-heavy and attraction-light. Convenience-store breakfasts in Taiwan are not a personality failure. Neither is one excellent street-food crawl in Vietnam that costs more than three mediocre hotel buffets.
