What you can learn from the pair

Courtesy as a public room, then a stall that is someone’s second shift. A genkan, then a Mazu light on a walk-up lane. Sit with why Japan and why Taiwan before you treat Taipei as a layover joke.

Who this is for

Roughly 12–18 days if both places get a fair share. Under ~10 days, pick one island and save the other. Longer than that, deepen (Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Tainan, east coast) — not a third airport day.

Arrive one country, leave the other. Round-tripping back through the first airport to “save on airfare” often spends the savings in trains, hotels, and attention.

The spine (default shape)

1. Tokyo — 3–4 nights. Bases and sidewalks first. Tokyo neighborhoods.
2. Kyoto + Osaka — 3–4 nights combined. One Shinkansen hop; do not duplicate every temple twice. Kyoto · Osaka.
3. Optional west / north Japan — Hiroshima / Miyajima or Kanazawa only if the calendar still breathes. Hiroshima · Kanazawa.
4. Border flight — short-haul Japan ↔ Taiwan (Tokyo or Kansai airports ↔ Taoyuan / Songshan). No invented yen or NTD fares here — shop the week you travel.
5. Taipei — 3–4 nights. Night markets as a neighborhood, not a checklist. MRT base near an interchange. Soft landing night after the flight.
6. Optional south — THSR to Taichung or Tainan for 1–2 nights if “not only Taipei” is the point. Tainan · THSR Pass math.

Reverse works cleanly: Taipei (optional south first) → flight into Kansai or Tokyo → Japan spine → fly home from Japan. Same two islands, different sunrise.

The border: air (not a ferry story)

Unlike the Hakata–Busan sea corridor, the practical Japan–Taiwan tourist border is short-haul air. City pairs travelers actually use include Tokyo (NRT/HND) ↔ Taipei (TPE/TSA) and Osaka/Kansai (KIX) ↔ Taipei. Schedules, carriers, and fares move weekly — Yomu will not freeze a fake “always ¥xx” into this page.

• Prefer an open-jaw international ticket (arrive Japan / leave Taiwan, or reverse) when the math works.
• Build half a buffer day around the hop — immigration, luggage, hotel check-in, and a soft first meal beat racing a dinner reservation.
• Songshan (TSA) vs Taoyuan (TPE) changes ground time into Taipei — match airport to hotel side before you celebrate a cheap fare.
• Typhoon season can shuffle both islands. Have a mental air/hotel backup; do not plan the whole trip around one non-refundable show the night of arrival.

Rail money (two systems — do not glue them)

Japan

Run the math on the JR Pass 2026 tables (official yen, online vs overseas agency, October 2026 agency step-up). Classic Tokyo–Kansai with one Shinkansen pair usually loses to point-to-point tickets + IC. A longer Japan west loop inside one activation window is when the nationwide pass gets interesting again. Taiwan

Inside Taiwan, city MRT/buses are EasyCard (or compatible) territory. Intercity is where visitors overbuy “unlimited.” Official THSR Pass (foreign short-term visitors), re-checked 19 Aug 2026 on pass.thsrc.com.tw — no drift:

• 3-Day Pass — adult NT$2,200 · child NT$1,100 (three consecutive days)
• Flexible 2-Day Pass — adult NT$2,500 · child NT$1,250 (any two days inside a designated seven-day window)

Visas & entry (official only)

Two entries mean two rulebooks. Yomu will not guess your stamp. Start on the government page that matches your nationality and passport type:

BOCA trial lines for Thailand / Brunei / Philippines ordinary passports (up to 14 days) still show effective until 31 July 2027 on the same page — re-read live footnotes before you book non-refundable stays. Japan nationals have a specific BOCA passport-validity note (valid for the intended stay) distinct from the general six-month line for many other cohorts — match your row, not a forum summary.

Season & load

• Sakura in Japan — year-labeled forecasts only. 2026 JMC tables live on Sakura JP×KR (Japan half still applies even if you skip Korea).
• Taiwan heat + typhoon windows — summer humidity is the itinerary; late summer / early autumn storms can move flights. Build slack, not bravado. See Taiwan seasons.
• Golden Week / consecutive holidays — Japan rail and hotels fill. Book the Japan long legs early or accept fewer cities.
• Lantern / major festival peaks in Taiwan — lovely and crowded; hotel near transit beats chasing every parade.

Packing the trip so it stays human

• One bag you can lift into an overhead bin without a committee meeting.
• eSIM or local SIMs planned per island; offline maps before airport Wi-Fi lies to you.
• Japan IC (Suica/Pasmo etc.) + Taiwan EasyCard (or compatible) — small plastic, large calm.
• Do not day-trip the international hop from a far suburb “to save a hotel.” Sleep near the departure airport corridor the night before if the flight is early.
• Money order: international open-jaw → Japan long rail only if math wins → Taiwan hotels near MRT → THSR pass only if you will actually ride south enough days.

Sample day budgets (philosophy, not a quote)

We refuse fake daily totals. Pay for the international hop and any long rail once in the plan, then keep city days food-heavy and attraction-light. Convenience-store breakfasts are not a personality failure. Neither is one excellent night-market crawl that costs more than three mediocre sit-downs.
