Multi-country · route
Two capitals. One hop. Keep the nights.
Read both cultures first: jeong, then a night market that is someone’s second shift. They fit when the air leg is a border with a pillow on both sides — not a same-day stunt. Official entry and rail only. Dated 20 August 2026.
What you can learn from the pair
A table that keeps arriving, then a stall that is someone’s second shift. Hangang, then a Mazu light. Sit with why Korea and why Taiwan before you treat either capital as a skyline only.
Who this is for
Roughly 10–16 days if both places get a fair share. Under ~9 days, pick one island-country and save the other. Longer than that, deepen (Gyeongju, Jeju, Tainan, east coast) — not a third airport day.
Arrive one country, leave the other. Round-tripping back through Incheon or Taoyuan just to “use the same ticket” often spends the savings in trains, hotels, and attention.
The spine (default shape)
- Seoul — 3–4 nights. Palaces, neighborhoods, night markets as a neighborhood walk. Seoul neighborhoods.
- Optional steel day south — Busan (1–2 nights) or Gyeongju overnight if you want salt air or tombs without Jeju logistics. Busan · Gyeongju.
- Optional Jeju — only with spare days and a calm flight budget. Island logistics eat a full day each way. Jeju.
- Border flight — short-haul Korea ↔ Taiwan (ICN/GMP ↔ TPE/TSA are the pairs travelers actually use). No invented won or NTD fares — shop the week you travel.
- Taipei — 3–4 nights. MRT base near an interchange. Soft landing night after the hop.
- Optional south — THSR to Taichung or Tainan for 1–2 nights if “not only Taipei” is the point. Tainan · THSR Pass math.
Reverse works cleanly: Taipei (optional south first) → flight into Seoul or Busan corridor → Korea spine → fly home from Korea. Same two places, different first meal.
The border: air (not a ferry story)
Unlike the Hakata–Busan sea corridor on the Japan–Korea spine, the practical Korea–Taiwan tourist border is short-haul air. Schedules, carriers, and fares move weekly — Yomu will not freeze a fake “always ₩xx” into this page.
- Prefer an open-jaw international ticket (arrive Korea / leave Taiwan, or reverse) when the math works.
- Build half a buffer day around the hop — immigration, luggage, hotel check-in, and a soft first meal beat racing a dinner reservation.
- Gimpo (GMP) vs Incheon (ICN) and Songshan (TSA) vs Taoyuan (TPE) change ground time into the city — match airport to hotel side before celebrating a cheap fare.
- Typhoon season can shuffle both sides of the strait and the peninsula. Have a mental air/hotel backup; do not plan the whole trip around one non-refundable show the night of arrival.
Rail money (two systems — do not glue them)
Korea
Run the math on the Korea entry + KORAIL PASS page (official K-ETA fee, temporary exemption window, FX select-day KRW table). Seoul-only trips rarely need a nationwide-style pass. A Seoul ↔ Busan (or Gyeongju) steel day inside one activation window is when FX gets interesting. Live product codes still F002–F005 on Korail’s pass-types API (re-checked 20 Aug 2026). Adult KRW from Korail global guide (last full table crawl 17 Aug 2026 — re-check checkout before pay):
- 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 day use — adult ₩131,000 / ₩186,000 / ₩234,000 / ₩275,000 · child roughly half
No invented single KTX seat fares on this site — buy point-to-point on korail.com global when the pass loses.
Taiwan
Inside Taiwan, city MRT/buses are EasyCard (or compatible) territory. Intercity is where visitors overbuy “unlimited.” Official THSR Pass (foreign short-term visitors), re-checked 20 Aug 2026 on pass.thsrc.com.tw — no drift vs 15/19 Aug:
- 3-Day Pass — adult NT$2,200 · child NT$1,100 (three consecutive days)
- Flexible 2-Day Pass — adult NT$2,500 · child NT$1,250 (any two days inside a designated seven-day window)
Standard class only (not business). Full hygiene, skip-pass rules, and sources: Taiwan entry + THSR.
Visas & entry (official only)
Two entries mean two rulebooks. Yomu will not guess your stamp. Start on the government page that matches your nationality and passport type:
- Korea K-ETA portal: k-eta.go.kr — guide fee wording ₩10,000 (+ separate online payment fee), typical assessment ≤72 hours, validity up to 3 years or passport expiry (checked 17 Aug 2026; hygiene on entry guide). Temporary exemption for countries/regions already under the framework through 31 Dec 2026 (KST) — re-read the MOJ notice for your passport.
- Korea visas (when K-ETA is not the path): visa.go.kr
- Taiwan visa-exempt entry (BOCA) — nationality cohorts 90 / 30 / 14 days + footnotes; passport validity rules and asterisks matter (re-checked 19 Aug 2026): boca.gov.tw — Visa-Exempt Entry
- Taiwan online immigration arrival card (BOCA remarks: complete within seven days prior to arrival): twac.immigration.gov.tw
BOCA trial lines for Thailand / Brunei / Philippines ordinary passports (up to 14 days) still showed effective until 31 July 2027 on the 19 Aug check — re-read live footnotes before you book non-refundable stays. Match your BOCA row, not a forum summary.
Season & load
- Sakura / spring blossoms — year-labeled forecasts only. Korea 2026 first bloom table lives on Sakura JP×KR (Korea half still applies even if you skip Japan).
- Korea summers + monsoon edges — humidity is the itinerary; Chuseok and long weekends fill trains. Book long legs early or accept fewer cities.
- Taiwan heat + typhoon windows — late summer / early autumn storms can move flights. Build slack, not bravado. See Taiwan seasons.
- Lantern / major festival peaks in Taiwan — lovely and crowded; hotel near transit beats chasing every parade.
Packing the trip so it stays human
- One bag you can lift into an overhead bin without a committee meeting.
- eSIM or local SIMs planned per country; offline maps before airport Wi-Fi lies to you.
- Korea T-money (or compatible) + Taiwan EasyCard (or compatible) — small plastic, large calm.
- Do not day-trip the international hop from a far suburb “to save a hotel.” Sleep near the departure airport corridor the night before if the flight is early.
- Money order: international open-jaw → K-ETA/BOCA hygiene → Korea long rail only if math wins → Taiwan hotels near MRT → THSR pass only if you will actually ride south enough days.
Sample day budgets (philosophy, not a quote)
We refuse fake daily totals. Pay for the international hop and any long rail once in the plan, then keep city days food-heavy and attraction-light. Convenience-store breakfasts are not a personality failure. Neither is one excellent night market crawl that costs more than three mediocre sit-downs.
