Ha Long Bay in mist

Multi-country · route

KTX mornings. Bowl evenings. One hop.

Read both cultures first: jeong, then a family table that does not need a tourist itinerary. They fit when the air leg is a real border with a pillow on both sides. Official entry and rail only. Dated 22 August 2026.

What you can learn from the pair

Banchan that keeps arriving, then a pot that was already open. Sit with why Korea and why Vietnam before you treat either city as a skyline only.

Who this is for

Roughly 12–18 days if both countries get a fair share. Under ~11 days, pick one and save the other — Seoul alone or Hanoi/Hoi An alone will beat a two-stamp blur. Longer than that, deepen (Gyeongju overnight, Jeju only with spare days, Ha Long overnight, Hoi An) — not a third international airport day.

Arrive one country, leave the other. Round-tripping back through Incheon or Tân Sơn Nhất just to “use the same ticket” often spends the savings in trains, hotels, and attention.

The spine (default shape)

  1. Seoul — 3–5 nights. The capital first; one palace block, one food district, one neighborhood walk. Seoul neighborhoods.
  2. Optional Busan / Gyeongju — 2–3 nights combined if the calendar breathes. One KTX day beats stacking every coastal pin. Busan · Gyeongju.
  3. Optional Jeju — only with spare days after the peninsula spine is honest. Jeju.
  4. Border flight — short-haul / medium-haul Korea ↔ Vietnam (Seoul ICN/GMP or Busan PUS ↔ Hà Nội / Nội Bài, Đà Nẵng, or HCMC / Tân Sơn Nhất). No invented KRW or USD air fares — shop the week you travel.
  5. Vietnam corridor (pick one primary shape)
    • North focus — Hanoi 3–4 nights + Ha Long or Ninh Binh 1–2 nights. Soft landing after Korea density.
    • Central lantern — Đà Nẵng utility airport → Hoi An 3–4 nights. Hoi An.
    • South city — HCMC 3–4 nights only if that is the point; do not bolt it on after a tired north week without spare days.

Reverse works cleanly: Vietnam corridor first → flight into Seoul or Busan → Korea spine → fly home from Korea. Same two countries, different first meal. If your passport is on Vietnam’s temporary exemption list (ROK is named on the embassy notice below), starting Vietnam can mean one less document before the hop — still re-read the live embassy text for your nationality. Korea entry still has its own K-ETA / exemption / visa path.

The border: air (not a rail story)

There is no tourist ferry story here like Hakata–Busan. The practical Korea–Vietnam tourist border is air. City pairs travelers actually use include Seoul (ICN/GMP) ↔ HAN / DAD / SGN and Busan (PUS) ↔ the same three when schedules cooperate. Carriers and fares move weekly — Yomu will not freeze a fake “always ₩xx” into this page.

  • Prefer an open-jaw international ticket (arrive Korea / leave Vietnam, or reverse) when the math works.
  • Build half a buffer day around the hop — immigration, luggage, hotel check-in, and a soft first meal beat racing a dinner reservation or a Ha Long bus.
  • Nội Bài (HAN) vs Đà Nẵng (DAD) vs Tân Sơn Nhất (SGN) changes the entire Vietnam shape — pick the airport for the corridor you will actually walk, not the cheapest map pin.
  • Monsoon and typhoon windows differ by region. Korea late-summer storms and Vietnam rains can both move flights; have a mental air/hotel backup.

Rail money (Korea only — do not invent Vietnam rail tables)

Korea

Run the math on the K-ETA + KORAIL PASS page before you buy a multi-day pass for one Seoul–Busan hop. Classic Seoul-only usually needs T-money, not a nationwide steel pass. A Seoul + Busan (+ optional Gyeongju) loop inside one FX activation window is when KORAIL PASS FX gets interesting again.

  • Live product codes on Korail pass/types API (re-checked 22 Aug 2026): F002–F005 (FX 2/3/4/5 day) still present — korail.com pass/types.
  • Adult KRW table last fully cited from Korail global guide (checked 17 Aug 2026; codes re-live today): 2-day ₩131,000 · 3-day ₩186,000 · 4-day ₩234,000 · 5-day ₩275,000 (child ~half on that table). Re-check KRW on official checkout — the types API confirms products, not always live yen-style price JSON.
  • No invented single KTX seat fares on this site. Buy point-to-point when the pass math loses.

Vietnam

Intercity rail exists (Vietnam Railways), but Yomu does not invent seat fares, berth prices, or “always book SE1” here. Treat long overnights as optional texture after the corridor is chosen — confirm live on the operator:

  • Vietnam Railways (English): vr.com.vn/en
  • City movement in Hanoi / HCMC / Đà Nẵng is usually app taxi / Grab / walkable cores — not a pass product. No invented Grab quotes on this site.

Visas & entry (official only)

Two entries mean two rulebooks. Yomu will not guess your stamp. Start on the government page that matches your nationality and passport type:

  • Korea K-ETA portal: k-eta.go.kr · guide fee wording still ₩10,000 (+ separate online payment fee) on the English application guide (last full fee crawl 17 Aug 2026; portal HTTP 200 on 22 Aug 2026). Typical assessment wording ≤72 hours; validity up to 3 years on the same guide family. Full hygiene: Korea entry + rail.
  • Korea temporary K-ETA exemption framework for named cohorts through 31 Dec 2026 KST — re-read the live MOJ/K-ETA notice for your passport; do not invent exemption from a blog list.
  • Korea visas when not covered by K-ETA / exemption: visa.go.kr
  • Vietnam e-visa official domains (Immigration notice from 08:00 11 Nov 2024 GMT+7): evisa.gov.vn · thithucdientu.gov.vn · index immigration.gov.vn
  • Fee wording on Immigration English apply flow (re-checked 22 Aug 2026 — no drift vs 16/20/21 Aug): processed in 3 working days; USD $25 single-entry e-visa · USD $50 multiple-entry e-visa — evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn apply steps. Full hygiene: Vietnam entry + e-visa.
  • Temporary unilateral exemption (dated embassy notice, not a full world matrix): Resolution 44/NQ-CP (7 Mar 2025), effective 15 Mar 2025 → 14 Mar 2028, 45 days for 12 named countries including Japan, ROK, DE, FR, IT, ES, UK, RU, DK, SE, NO, FI — VN Embassy Japan English notice. US and other passports: follow Immigration / your own embassy pointer — do not invent a US exemption from this list. ROK travelers still confirm Korea’s own exit/re-entry and Vietnam stamp rules for their document type.
If the site is not a .gov.vn immigration property (or the official K-ETA / visa.go.kr surfaces), treat the fee as a private service charge — not the government price.

Season & load

  • Cherry / spring in Korea — year-labeled forecasts only. 2026 VisitKorea tables live on Sakura JP×KR (Korea half still applies even if you skip Japan).
  • Vietnam north vs south climate — Hanoi winters can be grey and cool; the central coast has its own rain windows; the south runs hotter and wetter on a different clock. See Vietnam seasons.
  • Chuseok / consecutive holidays in Korea — rail and hotels fill. Book the Korea long legs early or accept fewer cities.
  • Tết / major Vietnamese holidays — lovely and logistics-heavy; book domestic seats and hotels early or accept quieter days and closed doors.

Packing the trip so it stays human

  • One bag you can lift into an overhead bin without a committee meeting.
  • eSIM or local SIMs planned per country; offline maps before airport Wi-Fi lies to you.
  • Korea T-money (or peer) for city calm; Vietnam cash + card mix still matters outside cores.
  • Do not day-trip the international hop from a far suburb “to save a hotel.” Sleep near the departure airport corridor the night before if the flight is early.
  • Money order: international open-jaw → Korea long rail only if math wins → Vietnam hotels near the corridor you chose → K-ETA/e-visa or exemption check before non-refundable domestic add-ons → Ha Long boat only from operators you can name.

Sample day budgets (philosophy, not a quote)

We refuse fake daily totals. Pay for the international hop and any long Korea rail once in the plan, then keep city days food-heavy and attraction-light. Convenience-store breakfasts in Korea are not a personality failure. Neither is one excellent street-food crawl in Vietnam that costs more than three mediocre hotel buffets.
