Sakura is a civic calendar two cultures still live by — not a hotel-district guarantee. Official 2026 Japan and Korea tables, labeled and dated. Use them to time a sitting week, not to invent prices. Checked 18 August 2026.
What the bloom actually is
In Japan the year is a material: rainy stone, cicada heat, a tree that is also a commute. In Korea the same week can empty a city toward hometowns or fill a fortress path. Read four weathers and the mountain the office already uses before you treat a forecast as a selfie plan.
How to read this page
Kaika = first flowering on the official observation tree (Japan). Mankai = full bloom. Korea’s public tourism page quotes first bloom by city and notes peak is roughly a week later — weather still moves the window. We copy official tables; we do not invent “best hotel rates” or single-seat fares.
Year-label every forecast. A 2024 blog date glued into 2027 is how people book the wrong week and then blame the trees.
Japan 2026 — Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC)
Source of truth for the table below: JMC — Release of 2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast (14th forecast), announced 23 April 2026 (final forecast of that season on the page). Species framing on the notice: Somei Yoshino at ~1,000 viewing locations. Dates are month/day as published.

JNTO also republishes first-bloom style lists for travelers (source note often points at Japan Weather Association / tenki.jp). Korea 2026 — VISITKOREA
Official tourism English article: VISITKOREA — 2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast. Headline wording on the page: blossoms expected two to seven days earlier than average. First-bloom list as published:

VISITKOREA’s own footnote: actual blooming and peak dates may differ with weather. For in-season status maps, Koreans often use KMA seasonal observation tools (e.g. weather.go.kr spring-flower theme) — use the live page the week you travel; we do not freeze a screenshot as eternal truth.
On the 2026 tables, Korea’s first blooms (Jeju/Busan ~Mar 25 · Seoul Apr 3) sit after Tokyo/Kyoto mankai on the JMC sheet — a natural south→north Japan week, then a Korea handoff, if you have the days.
Finishable spring corridor (shape, not a package)
- Kansai or Tokyo first — ride the central Japan mankai window on the JMC table, not every temple twice. Tokyo · Kyoto · Osaka.
- Optional west / north extension — Hiroshima on the same early band, or keep days for Tohoku/Hokkaido if your calendar is late April. Hiroshima.
- Border — Fukuoka → Busan sea or air, same hygiene as the year-round spine. Japan–Korea corridor.
- Korea second act — Busan salt + Jinhae/Gyeongju cluster if the south is still pink; Seoul when the capital’s first-bloom week lands. Busan · Seoul · Gyeongju.
Rough length: 12–16 days if both countries get a fair sakura share. Under 10 days, pick one country and one honest peak week — two airports and zero park time is how spring trips fail.
Money spine (no invented yen/won fares)
- Japan rail — Nationwide JR Pass only when the Shinkansen math wins. Full official 2026 yen tables (online vs agency; Oct 2026 agency step-up): JR Pass 2026. Source: japanrailpass.net. Classic “Tokyo + Kyoto only” often skips the nationwide pass — re-check the tables the week you buy.

- Stays — Spring weekends near famous parks sell out early. Book refundable where you can; we do not quote a fake “average hanami hotel” number.
- Visas — Japan short-stay exemption / eVISA: MOFA only (visa exemption, JAPAN eVISA). Korea: visa.go.kr + K-ETA guide above. Never invent eligibility.
Field manners (cheap insurance)
- Take your trash. Do not break branches for content.
- Picnic tarps are temporary real estate — leave when the park asks.
- Dawn and late light beat noon queues at the same tree.
- If rain strips petals overnight, the trip is still Japan/Korea — walk the neighborhood you booked for.
